We recently hosted an informative National Community of Practice webinar on Monday, 19 May 2025 at 7:00 PM AEST, featuring Associate Professor Michael Buckland - one of Australia’s leading neuropathologists and the Founding Director of the Australian Sports Brain Bank.

This free online session explored initial findings from the Australian Veterans Brain Bank, offering insights into brain trauma, concussion pathology, and the long-term impacts of repeated head injuries and blast exposure on veterans.

Repeated head trauma and blast exposure remain growing concerns in veteran healthcare. This webinar presented early findings from the first four veteran brains examined by the Australian Veterans Brain Bank, shedding light on the underlying pathology and what it could mean for the future of care.

In this special online session, Associate Professor Buckland offered expert insights grounded in clinical neuropathology and veteran-focused research, tailored for the broader veteran support community.

Meet your speakers

Associate Professor Michael Buckland 
Michael is a senior neuropathologist and Head of the Department of Neuropathology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He is the Founding Executive Director of the Australian Sports Brain Bank, Co-Director of the MS Australia Brain Bank, and leads the Molecular Neuropathology Program at the Brain & Mind Centre, University of Sydney. 

With over two decades of experience, Michael is widely recognised for his work exploring the effects of repetitive head injury and neurological damage, particularly in elite athletes, defence personnel, and veterans. His work is critical in shaping our understanding of how trauma affects the brain, and what early intervention and diagnosis might look like in the future. 

Dr. Michael Mumford

Principal GP at Medical Professionals Dapto and Southern Cross Pain Clinic, Dr. Mumford specialises in veteran healthcare, with a focus on chronic pain and mental health conditions. His dedication to this field shapes the mission of the Veteran Access Scheme™, which aims to support the unique health needs of Australian veterans.
