How Movement, Mindset and Medicine Work Together for Veteran Health
For many Australian veterans, health isn’t just about managing symptoms or taking medication. It’s about feeling strong and capable again, regaining confidence, sleeping better and finding a rhythm in daily life that feels manageable and becomes the new normal.
Provocatus understands the complexity of the challenges veterans face. That is why they built the Veteran Access Scheme™, a unique program that combines three essential elements: movement, mindset and medicine. This approach will support veterans to take steady steps toward a better quality of life.
Movement
For veterans living with chronic pain or injury, finding new ways to stay active can be challenging. Yet movement is vital to physical and psychological wellbeing.
The Veteran Access Scheme clinical team can support the veteran to connect, through their GP, with allied health professionals such as exercise physiologists or physiotherapists. These allied health movement specialists tailor plans to the veteran’s needs, goals and capacity.
With support and expert guidance, movement can be a pathway toward restored daily function, renewed confidence, and greater trust in the body’s ability.
Mindset
Movement has psychological benefit, too. When veterans start to move, they start to feel good! Combined with mindset and mental resilience, this behavioural activation becomes a powerful tool for veterans navigating civilian life. How people interpret challenges, setbacks and opportunities shapes how people adapt, manage emotions and pursue meaningful goals.
Provocatus partners with psychologists, like Beth Masling at the Southern Cross Pain Clinic, to help veterans develop a growth mindset and build resilience. Psychologists can offer practical strategies to address trauma, reduce anxiety and depression and support rebuilding after service-related challenges.
Through reframing, reflection and skill-building, veterans learn to approach adversity with confidence, manage stress, and re-engage with their lives and relationships.
Medicine
When it comes to medical treatment, veterans deserve more than ‘quick fixes’. Provocatus takes a holistic, personal approach with each individual.
Through the Veteran Access Scheme, prescribers spend time understanding each veteran’s story, assessing what’s worked (and what hasn’t) and tailoring treatment accordingly.
Medication is introduced only when it genuinely supports long-term wellbeing.
Through funding from Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), veterans access care that is personalised, regularly reviewed to ensure it’s appropriate, effective and aligned with best practice.
The Veteran Access Scheme: A Pathway to Real Support
The Veteran Access Scheme isn’t just a service, it’s a comprehensive pathway designed specifically for Australian veterans and the professionals who support them.
Built around four key pillars of care, it empowers veterans to navigate and make informed decisions about their own healthcare:
1. Comprehensive Intake and Assessment
Veterans are treated as individuals, with the team taking the time to understand their personal and service history, present needs, and personal goals.
2. Doctor and Pharmacist Support
By coordinating care across prescribers and pharmacists, stress is reduced and continuity ensured.
3. Ongoing Clinical Support
Veterans receive regular follow ups and adaptable support to meet evolving health needs.
4. Education and Empowerment
Information and resources are shared to help both veterans and their local healthcare providers make informed decisions and access DVA support confidently.
To learn more, go to the Four Pillars of Care page on the Provocatus website.
Importantly, the Veteran Access Scheme is free for eligible veterans and approved under the DVA, ensuring financial barriers don’t stand in the way of care.
At Provocatus, we believe that better access leads to better outcomes. By removing some barriers and offering consistent, coordinated care, the Veteran Access Scheme supports veterans to move forward with confidence.
